In short

What is takeaway insurance?

Takeaway insurance is a business package for premises that cook food to be collected or delivered. It usually covers the shop and kitchen equipment, chilled and frozen stock, takings, income lost after a fire or forced closure, and claims from staff and customers, including illness or allergic reactions caused by food you prepared.

It sits within hospitality insurance but is rated differently from a sit-down restaurant. Takeaways have fewer customers on site, but heavier frying, later hours, cash and drivers on the road, and those are the points underwriters concentrate on.

The vehicles your drivers use are not part of the takeaway policy. They need motor cover that allows food delivery, which is arranged separately and is a gap brokers often find.

What it covers

What does takeaway insurance cover?

Most takeaway policies combine the sections below. The schedule shows the limit for each outlet and any conditions attached to cooking equipment.

Fire and kitchen damage

Fire, smoke, flood and escape of water damage to the shop, counter, extraction and kitchen. Insurers set conditions on fryers and duct cleaning that are worth reading closely.

Kitchen equipment

Fryer ranges, pizza ovens, grills, tandoors, chillers and the electronic till and ordering screens, with accidental damage available on many policies.

Chilled and frozen stock

Food spoilt when a freezer or cold room fails or the power goes off, plus stock damaged in a fire or flood.

Closure and loss of income

Lost gross profit after insured damage, often extended to closure by the local authority following food poisoning, vermin or a drainage problem.

Food illness and allergens

Claims from customers made ill by contaminated food or an undeclared allergen. Products liability is the section that responds, and the limit matters for groups serving high volumes.

Employers' liability

Burns, cuts and slips in the kitchen, injuries to counter staff and accidents to employed drivers while working.

Cash and robbery

Takings in the till and safe, cash carried by drivers and banking runs, with assault benefits for staff hurt in a robbery.

Shop front and glass

Broken windows, shutters and illuminated signs, which late-night outlets replace more often than most shops.

Online ordering

Downtime and data loss if your ordering site, app or card terminal is hacked. Takeaways taking orders online often add a cyber section.

Other cover takeaway operators often add

  • Legal expenses: defence of food hygiene prosecutions, employment disputes and tenancy problems
  • Public liability: customers slipping in the queue or hurt by a falling sign, often packaged with products cover
  • Personal accident: benefits for drivers and staff injured by violence or on the road
  • Staff theft: cash taken from the till by employees, which standard money cover does not include
Takeaway operators

Which takeaway businesses is it for?

We mostly help operators with staff, drivers and more than one kitchen, though a busy single outlet with a full team fits just as well.

Running a restaurant or pub too? Mixed food businesses are often better on one hospitality policy. Non-food businesses can start from our industry index.

  • Takeaway groups: several outlets under one name, often with a central kitchen or prep unit
  • Franchisees: pizza, chicken and burger franchises, where the franchisor usually sets minimum cover levels
  • Fish and chip shops: heavy frying throughout the day, so fryer conditions and duct cleaning matter most
  • Indian, Chinese and Thai takeaways: woks, tandoors and open flame, with insurers asking about extraction
  • Kebab, grill and charcoal shops: rotisseries and charcoal grills plus late opening and cash handling
  • Pizza delivery businesses: high delivery volumes, a driver team and online ordering
  • Delivery-only kitchens: units serving several brands through apps, with no counter trade
  • Takeaways with a food van: a fixed shop plus a mobile unit at markets and events, which may need event cover for some pitches
  • Takeaway owners with own delivery fleets: cars or scooters owned by the business, insured on a fleet policy
  • Shop owners with a flat above: residential parts let or used by staff, which the property insurer must be told about
Cost

How much does takeaway insurance cost?

Premiums turn mainly on how food is cooked and how the business trades after dark. These are the points insurers weigh most.

Cooking methods

Deep frying, woks, charcoal and tandoor ovens carry more fire risk than reheating or cold preparation, and insurers rate them accordingly.

Fire controls

Records of professional duct cleaning, fryer thermostats with safety cut-outs, suppression systems over ranges and gas shut-off valves all count.

Hours and location

Late opening on a busy high street brings more break-ins, damage and assaults than an early evening trade.

Cash handled

How much cash is held overnight, whether drivers carry change and how often takings are banked.

Food safety record

Hygiene inspection outcomes, allergen procedures and any previous food complaints affect the liability sections.

Sites and claims

Number of outlets, sums insured, previous fires, thefts and claims from customers or staff.

Exclusions

What takeaway insurance does not cover

Several of these are policy conditions rather than exclusions, but the effect at claim time is the same.

  • Fire claims where the required duct cleaning or fryer safety conditions were not kept up
  • Drivers' vehicles, which need motor cover for food delivery such as hire and reward insurance
  • Closure ordered because of poor hygiene the business knew about and failed to fix
  • Cash left in the premises overnight above the limit on the schedule
  • Gradual breakdown and wear of fryers, chillers and extraction fans
  • Fines and penalties from food safety or licensing enforcement
  • Injury to delivery app riders on the road, which falls to the rider and the platform rather than your employers' liability
Delivery cover

Your own drivers or a delivery app?

How food reaches the customer changes what you need to insure. Many takeaways use both, so it is worth knowing where each risk sits.

How to buy

How to arrange takeaway insurance

The more an insurer knows about your kitchen, the fewer conditions and exclusions you are likely to see.

  1. Set out each outlet

Address, cuisine, cooking equipment, hours, staff numbers and whether there is a flat above.

  2. Gather fire evidence

Duct cleaning certificates, fryer and gas safety checks, and details of suppression systems.

  3. Explain deliveries

Employed drivers, vehicles owned by the business, app platforms, and how cash is handled.

  4. Confirm values and claims

Equipment, stock, gross profit, cash limits and any previous claims with what changed after.

  5. Read the conditions

Compare cleaning frequencies, cash limits, closure extensions and the products liability limit, not only the premium.

FAQs

Takeaway insurance questions

How much does takeaway insurance cost?

It depends mostly on cooking methods, fire controls, opening hours, location, cash handled, food safety record and claims. Two takeaways of a similar size can be priced very differently if one deep fries all day and trades past midnight.

Does takeaway insurance cover my delivery drivers?

It covers employed drivers for injury at work under employers' liability, but not their vehicles. Every car, motorbike or scooter used for deliveries needs motor cover that includes food delivery, either the driver's own or a business fleet policy.

Why do insurers ask about duct cleaning?

Grease builds up in extraction ducts and is a common cause of takeaway fires spreading beyond the kitchen. Most insurers make professional cleaning at set intervals a condition of cover, and ask for certificates as evidence.

Am I covered if a customer has an allergic reaction?

Usually yes, under products liability, provided you have described the business accurately. Insurers expect allergen information to be recorded and passed to customers, and a claim may be harder to defend if procedures were not followed.

Will insurance pay if environmental health closes my takeaway?

Only if the policy includes a closure extension. Many takeaway policies cover lost income when the local authority closes premises after food poisoning, vermin or defective drains, but not where the business knowingly ignored hygiene problems.

Can I insure several takeaways on one policy?

Yes. Most insurers will list each outlet on one schedule with its own values and cooking details. This gives a single renewal and makes it easier to keep cover consistent as you open new sites.

Do I need cyber cover for online orders?

It is worth considering if you take orders through your own website or app, or store customer details. A cyber section covers hacking, data breach costs and lost orders while systems are down, which a standard takeaway policy does not.

Does my franchisor's insurance cover my outlet?

Usually not. Franchisors normally require each franchisee to arrange their own cover, with minimum limits and the franchisor's interest noted on the policy. Check the franchise agreement for the exact requirements.

How do I get a takeaway insurance quote?

Begin with the form on this page and a broker who handles food-to-go risks will call. Duct cleaning records and details of cooking equipment for each outlet come first, then staff numbers, delivery arrangements, values and claims history.
